Differences Between Solid and Engineered Hardwood Floors

After recently examining the differences between carpet flooring and hardwood flooring, we’ve undoubtedly determined there are pros and cons to each option. If we were to look at the differences between solid and engineered hardwood floors, would we run into difficulties finding what sets them apart? Simply put, there aren’t too many distinctions, but the ones that exist could sway homeowners into choosing one over the other. The following are some of the key differences between solid and engineered hardwood floors one should know to make an informed decision for their home flooring.

Cost

Solid hardwood is refined from solid wood planks into ones with tongues and grooves. Engineered hardwood floors have a hardwood veneer or top layer, adhered to layers of wood or plywood. Different sources will tell you different things when it comes to which is a less expensive option. In general, engineered hardwood floors cost less. Still, cost considerations must also account for the specific price per square foot of each wood floor option and any additional expenses from readying the subfloor for installation.

Appearance and Variety

You’ll likely notice that most solid hardwood floors will contain narrower floorboards, but boasts a wide variety of colors, patterns, and finishes. Engineered hardwood options do replicate their solid wood counterparts very well. The added bonus is that engineered wood boards can be wider. There is no shortage of styles when a homeowner wants to choose between solid and engineered wood flooring.

Moisture-Resistance

Wood floors are known for being a less ideal option in moisture-prone or humidity-prone environments. But, under the right circumstances and professional installation, it is possible to have wood floors in kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms. Most flooring experts would tell you to opt for engineered hardwood floors in those conditions. Their layered or plywood construction is far less susceptible to warping and is often treated with moisture-resistant bonding agents.

Longevity

The longevity of any hardwood flooring is based mainly on a homeowner’s willingness to clean and maintain their floors. However, time can wear away at this flooring’s beauty. That’s why you often hear about homeowners refinishing their hardwood floors. Solid hardwood can be sanded, re-stained, and refinished several times. Conversely, engineered hardwood floors have a thinner solid wood layer, meaning it can be refinished once or twice depending on the top layer’s thickness. Taking this factor into account, solid hardwood floors earn the reputation of greater longevity.
